UC Berkeley - Memorial Stadium

February-October, 2004

I started photographing Memorial Stadium in February, 2004 intending it to be a two or three month project. I have spent many evenings there and have found that the ongoing possibilities for photography projects there to be almost endless. As you will see when you browse through the images here, the architecture in general is impressive: the size, the location and the variations in design over the years for example. There are many small features that stand out: the old style drinking fountains, the lights, the seating. And, the grand views from the stadium of the San Francisco Bay area: you can see from the San Mateo Bridge in the south all of the way to the San Rafael Bridge in the north; the cities of San Francisco, Oakland, Berkeley, etc.; and the UC Berkeley campus. All of these things, and more, make Memorial Stadium a long term source for photography projects.

I have been photographing at the stadium two or three times per month, almost always at night and usually with another photographer that enjoys night photography. Having another photographer along helps in many ways: just the company, someone to talk to; for the different points of view in seeing the stadium; and to help out on occasion with lighting, setup, etc..

Memorial Stadium is located on the east side of the campus on Piedmont Avenue. For more details, go to UC Berkeley's Memorial Stadium web page.

This is currently an in-progress project, so the images are not necessarily in any order and will change over time.

Because Memorial Stadium is such a large venue, there are several sub-projects:
